Description
Celandine-poppy, scientifically known as Stylophorum diphyllum, is a striking perennial plant belonging to the family Papaveraceae. Originally described by Michaux and later classified by Nuttall, this alluring plant was formally documented in the second volume of “Genera of North American Plants” in 1818.
Native to the rich woodlands and forested areas of Southern Ontario, the Eastern and Central United States, reaching as far south as North Carolina, the Celandine-poppy thrives in moist, well-drained soils. This spring ephemeral is noted for its vibrant yellow flowers, which emerge in clusters typically in mid to late spring, providing a splash of color in shaded garden spots or naturalized woodland settings.
The plant features deeply lobed, blue-green leaves that can add a decorative element to the understory of gardens. Standing about one to two feet tall, the Celandine-poppy is easy to cultivate in its natural habitat and makes a fantastic addition to native plant gardens, offering ecological benefits by supporting native wildlife.
Sustainable gardening practices are enriched with the inclusion of Stylophorum diphyllum, as it is not only aesthetically pleasing but also relatively low-maintenance once established. Gardeners and landscape enthusiasts value it not only for its beauty but for its contribution to biodiversity and its role in supporting pollinators during its blooming period.
Ideal for shaded borders and woodland gardens, the Celandine-poppy continues to be cherished both in its native range and in areas where it has been introduced by enthusiasts of North American flora.
