Description

Foetid chamomile, scientifically known as Anthemis cotula, is a notable plant species that belongs to the Asteraceae family. This species was first described by the eminent botanist Carl Linnaeus in the authoritative volume “Species Plantarum” on page 894 in the year 1753.

Anthemis cotula is commonly found across diverse regions, ranging from Madeira and throughout Europe to the Mediterranean and extending as far as Iran. Its wide geographical distribution underscores the plant’s adaptability to various climatic and environmental conditions.

The plant is often recognized by its distinctive, somewhat unpleasant odor, which is alluded to by its common name, “Foetid chamomile.” Despite this characteristic scent, the plant has been utilized in traditional medicine and various cultural practices across its native regions. The presence of characteristic features of the Asteraceae family, such as its composite flower heads, contributes to its identification and classification within this large and varied family of plants.

In summary, Anthemis cotula is a plant of considerable interest not only due to its wide distribution and historical botanical description but also because of its distinct sensory properties and place within the Asteraceae family.
