Description
Schweinfurth’s tea-tree, scientifically known as Lycium schweinfurthii, is an intriguing member of the Solanaceae family. First described by the botanist Dammer in 1912, this plant species was detailed in the “Botanische Jahrbücher für Systematik” (Bot. Jahrb. Syst.) Volume 48 on page 224.
This particular species is notable for its distribution, being native to a broad range that spans from Sicily across southern and eastern regions of the Mediterranean. This geographical range supports a variety of ecosystems, allowing the Schweinfurth’s tea-tree to thrive in a number of Mediterranean environments.
In appearance, the plant exhibits the characteristic features of the Lycium genus, which is often recognized by its shrubby form and sometimes thorny branches. The Mediterranean climate, with its dry summers and mild, wet winters, provides an ideal habitat for this resilient plant species.
Schweinfurth’s tea-tree contributes to the biodiversity of its native regions, playing a role in local ecological systems. Like many members of the Solanaceae family, it may be of interest for its potential uses in traditional practices or further botanical research.
Considering its wide distribution and ecological adaptability, Lycium schweinfurthii stands as a significant species within the Mediterranean flora, meriting attention both for its botanical characteristics and its role within its native habitats.
